Jennie Lee

... was born in Lochgelly, Fife in 1904. She was elected to parliament in 1929, at the age of 24 – too young to vote at the time.

She was married to Aneurin (Nye) Bevan, from 1934 until his death in 1960.

As Minister for the Arts in the Wilson government (from 1964 to 1970), she played a leading role in the foundation of the Open University.

She lost her seat at the 1970 General Election, and was made Baroness Lee of Asheridge, of the City of Westminster. She died in 1988, aged 84.
